Well, JoCo said via Twitter that he did give Viacom permission to use his Flickr video back when Spike.com was iFilm, so he himself may not necessarily be owed the 37 dollars.

However, I did mention that the owners of the pictures should probably get money due, since they themselves did not give permission for their pictures to be used for monetary gain. So, yeah, it should be time for Viacom to break out the checkbook.

Really well written, Agent Smith! Hey, wouldn't they also owe $37.00 to every person from Flickr whose photo appears in the video? After all, Creative Commons licenses retain rights even through derivative works.

That's a fair number of $37.00 payouts. And even more bazillion dollar payouts using crazy Viacom math.

BEGIN MINI RANT

This is just an awesome idea in general. Art, be it music, film, print, etc, doesn't need the big players/corporations. Connecting with fans and giving them a reason to buy/be involved will become more and more important as technology gives the common man the ability to easily create. The 21 century will be one of digital patronage.

END RANT

I didn't quite forget. I was going to state that he popularized the gesture despite the fact that he wasn't the first rock musician to use it. I just didn't get around to it and for that, I apologize.

You forgot his largest cultural contribution: Dio was the guy that gave us the universal hand gesture of rock, aka throwing the horns.

It is super simple to fix. The attitude above is the one I use.

HOWEVER...

most people on the internet are not used to living in public. I've been posting on BBSs since I was 12, and assume everything I ever place in an email/webpost/microblog/mediumofthemoment will be seen by the entire world. The vast majority of internet citizens do not think in this manner, and it will take a generation of turnover for the average person on the net to do so. In the meantime, the poor fools out there posting without thinking need to be protected. It's irresponsible of Facebook to not assist them in doing so without all this current rigamarole.

Love the Legend of the Overfiend reference.

Hate to say it, but this is super, super simple to fix: Don't put anything you don't want people looking at online. I Tweet (which feeds to FB) about various and sultry things, but not anything that I DON'T want public, such as my tendency to torture, kill, and finally eat one-legged hookers.

It's really not a hard line to draw folks.

Oh, FYI, bkI's integration with Facebook is one way and we currently have no plans to institute any of the new FB connection stuff that prompted their latest change in their Privacy Policy. You want to share a bkI post on FB? Use the "Share This" button at the bottom of every page.
